Dozens Left Homeless After Massive Apartment Fire
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A four-alarm fire ripped through a Northeast Dallas apartment complex Thursday evening, sending residents fleeing and forcing firefighters to fight a defensive battle against the intense flames.
The first calls for help came around 4:45 p.m. at the Stone Ranch Apartments, located in the 9300 block of East Skillman Street.
Dallas Fire-Rescue said there was only a little smoke when firefighters first arrived, but that the flames soon extended into the walls and attic space.
"As the fire escalated to a fourth alarm, command pulled everyone from inside the building and continued the fight from outside," said DFR spokesman Jason Evans. "Investigators believe that the fire began in a unit on the third floor of the building."
The Red Cross reported 24 apartment homes were destroyed and 24 more left without essential services, leaving 90 people displaced.
No residents were hurt, but one firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after some ceiling debris fell on him, Evans said.
Even though investigators have an idea where the fire began, an official cause is not yet known.
