TEXAS/MEXICO BORDER (CBSDFW.COM) - A Watauga man faces federal smuggling charges after he was caught behind the wheel of a 18-wheeler full of illegal immigrants.

"The driver was just standing there, just like, not a care in the world," said Sgt. Jerry Reyna, Frio County Sheriff's Office.

The driver, Drew Potter, claimed ignorance of his human cargo. "All I was paid was to drive the truck and that was it."

Deputies in Frio County near the border said Potter showed no concern for the immigrants when arrested. He only asked for something to drink.

Deputies said 39 men, women and children were in the back of the truck for five hours -- many of them too weak to stand.

The immigrants will likely be held as witnesses for Potter's trial, according to officials.
