2022 Oscars Coverage: Updates As They Happen

HOLLYWOOD (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Coverage of the Oscars as it happens:

10:34 p.m.: "CODA" wins the Oscar for best picture.


10:28 p.m.: Jessica Chastain wins best actress for her role in "The Eyes of Tammy Faye."


10:20 p.m.: "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" won the Oscar for best make-up and hair.


10:10 p.m.: Will Smith has won the Oscar for best actor for his role in "King Richard," minutes after hitting Chris Rock on live TV.


9:58 p.m.: Jane Campion has won the Oscar for best director for "Power of the Dog."


9:53 p.m.: Billie Eilish and Finneas won the Oscar for best original song "No Time To Die" from the movie of the same name.


9:50 p.m.: "Dune" wins a fifth Oscar for best production design.


9:29 p.m.: "Summer of Soul" wins for best documentary.


9:22 p.m.: "Dune" wins its fourth Oscar for best editing.


9:03 p.m.: Sian Heder wins the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for "CODA."


9:00 p.m.: Kenneth Branagh wins best original screenplay for "Belfast."


8:45 p.m.: Jenny Beavan has won best costume design for "Cruella."


8:31 p.m.: Japan's "Drive My Car" has won the Oscar for best international feature.

Based on a short story by Haruki Murakami, "Drive My Car" was directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who is also was nominated for co-writing the screenplay.

"Drive My Car" is also nominated for best picture.

It's the fifth time a film from Japan has won the award, and the first time since 2008.

It beat out Italy's "The Hand of God," Norway's "The Worst Person in the World," Denmark's "Flee" and Bhutan's "Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom."


8:21 p.m.: Troy Kotsur has won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in "CODA."

Kotsur on Sunday night became the second actor who is deaf to win an Academy Award. His "CODA" co-star Marlee Matlin was the first when she won best actress for "Children of a Lesser God" in 1987.

He dedicated the film to the Deaf community. "This is our moment."

Kotsur was barely known as an actor before "CODA," but was considered a heavy favorite for the Oscar after the acclaimed performance and wins earlier in awards season.

He beat out fellow nominees Ciarán Hinds, Jesse Plemons, J.K. Simmons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. He thanked his dad, paralyzed in a car accident: "You are my hero."


8:11 p.m.: "The Windshield Wiper" wins for best animated short.


8:03 p.m.: "Encanto" wins for best animated feature film.


7:47 p.m.: "Dune" wins its third award for best visual effects.


7:44 p.m.: "The Queen of Basketball" wins for best documentary short film.


7:37 p.m.: "Dune" wins again for best cinematography.


7:34 p.m.: "Dune" wins for best sound.


7:31 p.m.: The Oscar for best supporting actress goes to Ariana DeBose for "West Side Story."

DeBose won the Academy Award on Sunday night for her acting, singing and dancing as Anita in her breakthrough role in the Steven Spielberg reimagining of the classic musical.

She becomes the first Afro-Latina and openly LGBTQ actor win in the category. "To anybody who has ever questioned your identity," she said, "I promise you there is a place for us."

Largely unknown in film circles before landing the coveted role, the 31-year-old North Carolina native became the clear Oscar favorite after an awards season full of victories.

She was previously primarily known as a stage actress, with Broadway roles in "Bring It On: The Musical," "Motown: The Musical" and "Hamilton."

DeBose beat out fellow nominees Jessie Buckley, Judi Dench, Kirsten Dunst and Aunjanue Ellis. She thanked Rita Moreno, who starred in both 1961 and 2021 film adaptations.
