2 Teens Charged With Murder Of 16-Year-Old Birdville High School Student

HALTOM CITY, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) — Two teenagers have been charged with the murder of a 16-year-old Birdville High School student.

Just after 2 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a shooting call at the Rio Vista apartments in Haltom City, where they found the young man's body with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Police say the victim, who was later identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner as Christopher Cashen, nor the suspects lived at the apartment complex.

During their investigation, detectives identified and located two teenaged suspects. The suspects, ages 15 and 16, were transported to the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with murder.

Haltom City Det. Matthew Spillane said the fact that the suspects were teenagers made it "just that much more disheartening."

"It's troubling," Spillane said. "No matter what the circumstances were, it's an unnecessary loss of life that we wish could have been prevented."

Police said that the victim and suspects are all residents of Richland Hills but due to their age, the suspects will not be identified.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Haltom City police at 817-222-7000.
