MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - A man has been arrested for the stabbing of two Eastfield College campus police officers. This happened late on Monday night as the officers were investigating an individual who appeared to be trying to break into an unused classroom.

The officers were on foot patrol at about 9:45 p.m. when one of them spotted the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Miguel Sarinana. The suspect is thought to be homeless. While being questioned, Sarinana allegedly attacked the officer with a knife, stabbing him several times. The second police officer then rushed to assist, and was also stabbed several times.

"Even though they were receiving blows and they were receiving cuts, the officers kept fighting," stated Lt. Brian Parrish from the Mesquite Police Department. "When you're in law enforcement, that's the important part. Don't ever give up. Stay in the fight."

Sarinana fled into a nearby neighborhood with the first officer in pursuit. At this point, the Mesquite Police Department joined in the search. Police received a call shortly before 11:30 p.m. from a man in that neighborhood who said that his dog had been barking at something suspicious. Officers then found the suspect hiding in tall grass in an alleyway.

The dog has been credited with helping authorities track down the suspect. "We know her, she's been with us that long," stated dog owner Amanda Cruz on Tuesday morning. "She was like, so aggressive. The bark was, it wasn't the normal bark, the way she barks. It was just with anger, and we knew something was back there."

School police said that they have dealt with Sarinana before, but this is the first time that it has turned violent. "It's my understanding that they've had several run-ins with this particular individual," Parrish also added. "He appears to be homeless and living in the area. We know that criminal trespass warnings have been given to this individual in the past."

Police believe that Sarinana was breaking into the school building in order to have a place to sleep for the night. He is now in police custody, facing two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant.

The two campus police officers were transported to Baylor Medical Center at Dallas and are now in stable condition. The first hurt officer has been identified as Ofc. Elias Raymundo, a two-year veteran. The second injured officer has been named as Sgt. Melissa Jacobs, a four-year veteran. They are expected to be released from medical care on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the suspect suffered cuts to his hand and was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas for treatment. He was then transferred to Mesquite Jail.
