DENTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Police say one person has been rescued but another died after being swept away by high water in a North Texas canal.

Denton police say the incident happened shortly before dawn Saturday. The name of the man who died was not immediately released.

A Denton officer was flagged down, near Bell Place and East McKinney Street, and told that a man and woman had been swept away by floodwaters in a canal.

Officers located the woman, identified as Teresa Kelly, yelling for help about a-half mile away in the canal. She was recused and taken to Denton Regional Medical Center for examination.

Kelly was rescued as the Denton Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team continued searching for the missing man. His body was located near South Loop 288, about five hours later.

Forecasters say the Denton area received scattered rainfall early Saturday.
