GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) — A person died in one of two nearby fires about 50 firefighters worked to quell in Garland Friday night.

Firefighters responded to a burning townhouse in the 700 block of Intrepid Drive around 10:50 p.m., according to the Garland Fire Department. The blaze bumped up to two alarms 10 minutes later when firefighters reported another fire in the 700 block of Arrowhead Circle, which is adjacent to Intrepid Drive. While no one was injured in the Arrowhead duplex fire, one person died and another suffered smoke-inhalation injuries at the Intrepid Drive townhouse.

The man with smoke inhalation was taken to a local hospital, but the department said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. There's no word yet on the identity or specific cause of death for the other victim.

Flying embers from the townhouse may have ignited the Arrowhead duplex, causing the second fire, the department said. The department estimated the total dollar loss for that location to be $45,000.

The department said investigators were on the scene until 6 a.m. Saturday, but the cause of the fires and the total dollar loss amount for the Intrepid Drive townhouse, which had four units within it, have not been determined.
