Yet Another I-80 Freeway Shooting Plagues The East Bay

HERCULES (CBS SF) -- A shooting that left at least one person injured on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 in Hercules Tuesday night is just the latest act of gun violence to shut down East Bay freeways.

California Highway Patrol spokesman John Fransen said there was police activity reported in Hercules.

CHP officials received a call about a shooting on I-80, just west of state Highway 4, at 9:16 p.m.

All eastbound lanes of I-80 were shut down while police investigated the shooting, but lanes were reopening shortly after 10 p.m.

Four of the five eastbound I-80 lanes remained closed at Pinole Valley Road while two lanes of eastbound I-80 were closed at westbound Highway 4.

Details about the victim's condition were not immediately available.

A spate of shootings along this stretch of highway, and nearby state Highway 4, have led to collisions, injuries and even death in recent weeks.

Tuesday's incident follows a trend of 20-plus shootings that have been reported on highways in Contra Costa and Alameda counties since November.

Following a series of shootings along Highway 4, city officials in Pittsburg unanimously approved the installation of surveillance cameras along the freeway.

Just last week, four people were arrested following a shooting along state Highway 4 in Pittsburg.

On May 11th, Shanique Marie, a 25-year-old mother of four, was killed when a gunman opened fire on her and her boyfriend around 11 a.m. on Highway 4 near Railroad Avenue in Pittsburg. Marie's boyfriend was critically injured in the shooting and police said the couple had been targeted.

Marie's death was the fourth death as a result of gunfire sprayed from a passing vehicle on an East Bay freeway since November.

Authorities say most of the shootings have been linked to gang activity.
