Yahoo Scores Streaming Touchdown With Deal To Air NFL's London Game
SUNNYVALE (CBS SF) - Yahoo is making NFL history.
The Sunnyvale firm will livestream the Buffalo Bills-Jacksonville Jaguars game on October 25th free to users worldwide, making money on the advertising.
Re/code reports that industry experts think Yahoo is paying $20-million for the rights to be the first Internet firm to stream an NFL game for free.
CBS will handle the production aspects of the game, which is being played in London, and since it features two smaller market teams, its believed the NFL is testing the waters with the streamcast.
"We're thrilled that the NFL has chosen Yahoo for this historic opportunity," said Marissa Mayer, President and CEO of Yahoo. "It marks a significant change in the way users can access this amazing content. The NFL and Yahoo have both long engaged football fans around the world. Our partnership provides the ultimate football experience — with digital availability, designed for the modern fan."
And for us West Coasters, we'll have to get up nice and early for the game (no problem for those of us who wake up before dawn each day) as the kickoff is set for 6:30am Pacific, given the London location.
