WWII Veterans Dying At Alarming Rate

SAN RAFAEL (KCBS) -- According to the Veteran's Administration, World War Two vets are dying at a rate of nearly 500 each day. That means there are approximately 885,000 veterans remaining out of the 16 million who served the nation then.

Veterans gathered at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium Monday to share stories of their time in the service while a local band played patriotic favorites.

"It was like going to hell and back," WWII Veteran Dominic Brumante told KCBS. He helped liberate the Philippines during the war.  Brumante wanted to honor the many friends he lost during the war.

"It's real hard for me, but that's the way. And, they say, you know, when the G.I.'s say 'we'll watch your back.' And, we sure watched each other's back," Brumante said.
