Wrong-Way Driver Fleeing Alameda County Sheriff's Deputies Crashes Off I-580 In Castro Valley

CASTRO VALLEY (CBS SF) -- A wrong-way driver who crashed just off of Interstate Highway 580 in Castro Valley Wednesday afternoon was fleeing from Alameda County sheriff's deputies, officials said.

A white sedan exited eastbound Highway 580 the wrong way on the Grove Way on-ramp and crashed into a tree at 1:51 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Sheriff's deputies had been pursuing the driver after they tried to pull him over for speeding but he kept driving, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

The deputies called off the pursuit when the driver went the wrong way down the on-ramp, Nelson said.

The driver crashed into the tree shortly afterward, bringing the tree down onto the car and smashing the windshield, according to the CHP.

Witnesses told the CHP that the male driver took off running after the crash.
