World Market Retailer Leaves Oakland, Blames Uber
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Cost Plus World Market announced that it is moving its headquarters from Oakland to Alameda, blaming the Oakland newcomer Uber for driving them out.
The home goods store headquarters will relocate its roughly 400 workers from their Jack London Square location to new headquarters in Alameda, citing rising rents and an office space squeeze in Oakland.
Cost Plus World Market says they are in need of more space, but that ever since Uber Technologies purchased Oakland's Sears Building it has becoming increasingly difficult to find office space in downtown Oakland.
The new Cost Plus World Market headquarters is expected to open in Alameda by the end of the year.
