World Cup Becomes World's Biggest Social Media Event With Millions Of Tweets, Posts Shared

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- If you weren't able to make it to Brazil, chances are you caught all the World Cup action online as it became the world's biggest social media event.

In the USA-Portugal match, there were 8-million tweets about the game as it was happening.

"People love to gossip on social media," CBS Digital Director Brandon Mercer said.

When the USA lost to Belgium, fans looking for comfort didn't have to look far.

The Bay Area's own Chris Wondolowski tweeted "It's been an incredible ride, but I know this will make me stronger."
