Worker Crushed To Death By Rolling Pipe At Highway 101 Widening Project In Petaluma
PETALUMA (CBS SF) - A man working on the Highway 101 widening project in Petaluma was crushed to death Wednesday when a huge pipe barreled down a hillside.
Division of Occupational Safety and Health officials told Bay City News Service that the incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. on Kastania Road.
A forklift operator set the pipe on the ground and it rolled toward an embankment. The victim died when he tried to stop the rolling pipe, CHP Officer Kerri Post said.
The worker killed in the construction accident has been identified as 28-year-old Jared Overfield.
"Jared Overfield was a remarkable child. He loved what he did, he loved what he learned. And he'll be missed," Jared's father Peter Overfield told KPIX 5.
"He's the best brother I've ever had. And I'm going to miss him. And it's really hard," said John Zamberlin, the Jared's stepbrother.
After graduating San Marin High School in Novato in 2004, Jared Overfeld got into the construction business a few years later, with help from his stepfather.
"Nobody should have to lose anybody who says 'I love you' all the time like he did," said Dan Zamberlin, Jared's stepfather. "He always was a loving and caring person and was a hard worker. And we're going to miss him. Unbelievable."
