Woman Reportedly Survives Leap Off I-880 Overpass In San Jose

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – Following a standoff that lasted several hours, a woman leapt from an overpass on Interstate 880 in San Jose Wednesday afternoon and survived.

According to Bay City News Service, authorities spotted the woman on an overpass above Coyote Creek and Southbound Interstate 880 near Brokaw Road shortly after 10:00 a.m. The California Highway Patrol, Milpitas Police and the Santa Clara County Public Health Department negotiated with the woman.

The San Jose Mercury News reported that the woman jumped without warning around 2:45 p.m.

"She landed in a soft, grassy, muddy area, and was conscious, breathing, and responsive," CHP Officer Ross Lee told the Mercury News.

The woman was taken to the hospital. Two lanes of the freeway that were closed during the standoff were reopened shortly after.
