Wild Weather System Brings Tornado, Power Outages To California

DENAIR (CBS SF) -- The tornado that swept through a Northern California town damaged 21 homes—in the worst case shifting one on its foundation.

Sgt. Anthony Bejaran of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said Monday that nobody was hurt in Sunday afternoon's tornado. It traveled down a street in the community of Denair, near Modesto.

He says a large tree fell on a second home, destroying the roof; several cars were damaged, and sheds were carried from one yard into the next.

Bejaran says there's no estimate on the cost of damages.

Eric Kurth of the National Weather Service in Sacramento says wind speeds in the tornado surpassed 110 mph.

Officials say work crews are cleaning up debris blown into city streets.

The storm system knocked out power for nearly 18,000 customers when winds knocked down trees and power lines across Los Angeles.

Officials say workers have been on the scene of several outages since the winds whipped up late Sunday as part of a cold front moving east into Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.

The Department of Water and Power said Monday that crews are working to restore power in more than a dozen neighborhoods including parts of Hollywood.

Earlier, crews restored power to nearly 14,000 customers.
