Google Workforce Breakdown Shows White Males Dominate In Tech

MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS SF) -- Google released a breakdown of the demographics of its workforce for the first time Wednesday, showing its employees are predominantly white males.

Google has struggled to diversify its workforce in a sector dominated by white males, which was evident in the breakdown, showing that 70-percent of their total workers are male, and 61-percent are white.

Male workers described as working within Google's 'tech' sector dominated even further, representing 83-percent of those employees.

Asian workers are the second most populous demographic, while blacks make up only 2 percent.

The Mountain View-based company acknowledged the disparity in a press release. "We're not where we want to be when it comes to diversity. And it is hard to address these kinds of challenges if you're not prepared to discuss them openly, and with the facts," Google wrote.

The numbers included Google's global workforce, and didn't include a breakdown of the U.S. demographics.

At the leadership level, almost 80 percent are men and 72 percent are white.

Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition was in the Bay Area recently at eBay and Google shareholder meetings, making a case for more blacks, other minorities and women in Silicon Valley.
