CHP closes westbound Hwy 24 in Lafayette for investigation; witness reports shooting between cars

Car with child passenger struck by vehicle involved in Lafayette highway shootout

LAFAYETTE -- CHP officers in Lafayette shut down a stretch of westbound Highway 24 for about 30 minutes as officers investigated a possible road rage shooting late Wednesday morning.

Chopper footage showed westbound Highway 24 closed from Pleasant Hill Road to Central Lafayette at around 11:45 a.m. with officers driving slowly with their driver's side doors open as they scanned the roadway for evidence.

The California Highway Patrol said the shooting between the two vehicles caused one of them to hit a third vehicle. The driver of the third vehicle, who had a child with him, is the one who called to report the crash and shooting.

The driver told CHP officers the two cars involved in the shooting came up from behind. He saw them driving erratically and then heard gunshots.

CHP officers checked his car for bullet holes and additional damage, but he said amazingly his car wasn't hit by bullets. The only damage was caused by being hit by one of the suspect's vehicles.
