Weekend Construction Project On I-280 Completed

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A piece of Southbound Interstate 280 in San Francisco was reopened around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning following a construction project over the Memorial Day weekend, according to Caltrans.

Caltrans officials said the highway, previously closed from Sixth Street to U.S. Highway 101, reopened before 5 a.m.

This is the first in a series of closures planned during holiday weekends this year, as Caltrans worked to replace broken hinges along the viaduct Saturday afternoon.

The hinges allow the bridge to accommodate expansion and contraction, as well as movement caused by an earthquake.

Northbound 280 remained open over the weekend, but will be closed on the 4th of July holiday and Labor Day holiday weekends, so the other three hinges on that side of the roadway can be replaced.
