Waste Management Sues Oakland Over $1 Billion Trash Contract
OAKLAND (CBS/AP) — The nation's largest trash hauler has filed a lawsuit claiming the city of Oakland illegally awarded a $1 billion contract to a local garbage company.
Waste Management argues in its suit in Alameda County Superior Court filed Monday that the City Council was swayed by "personal and political connections" when it voted last week to award the deal to Oakland-based California Waste Solutions.
The lawsuit also says the deal came after city staffers recommended sticking with Waste Management.
The Texas-based company accuses the city of sharing its proposal with California Waste Solutions asks judge to overturn that decision and award the contract to them.
Alex Katz, a spokesman for City Attorney Barbara Parker, says he could not comment on the suit because the city had not yet reviewed it.
