Walnut Creek Resident Subdues Man In Alleged Home Burglary

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- A neighbor was able to subdue a man suspected of burglarizing a home in Walnut Creek on Monday evening, a police sergeant said.

Officers responded to a report of a disturbance at The Boulders apartment complex in the 500 block of Civic Drive around 7:25 p.m., Sgt. Scott Moorhouse said.

Arriving officers and detained the suspect, identified as 51-year-old James Murdaugh, Moorhouse said.

Investigators learned Murdaugh allegedly committed a residential burglary and was confronted by a neighbor as he tried to flee, according to Moorhouse.

The neighbor was able to physically subdue Murdaugh until officers arrived and took him into custody, he said.

Murdaugh allegedly stabbed the neighbor with a screwdriver and a passerby called 911 after coming across the scene, Moorhouse said.

The neighbor suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment, according to Moorhouse.

The victims of the burglary were not home during the incident, he said.

Murdaugh was arrested and transported to a hospital for treatment before being booked into county jail. He is also on parole for burglary, police said.
