VIDEO: CHP Helicopter Rescues Man Adrift In San Pablo Bay On Homemade Raft

PINOLE (CBS SF) -- A man adrift on the San Pablo Bay aboard a homemade raft was rescued by the Coast Guard and California Highway Patrol Friday afternoon amid high winds.

The CHP said it got a call from the Coast Guard requesting its rescue chopper after a man was spotted approximately one half of a mile from shore, drifting to the middle of the San Pablo Bay between Pinole and Hercules.

A Good Samaritan had attempted to come to the man's aid, but abandoned the effort because of the weather conditions and cold water temperature.

The CHP chopper arrived and lowered a rescue basket to the man.

** San Pablo Bay Water Rescue** This afternoon, CHP H-30 was requested by the United States Coast Guard to respond and assist in the rescue of a man who was approximately one half of a mile from shore and drifting to the middle of the San Pablo Bay. It was reported that civillan was attempting to rescue the man but was having a difficult time due to high winds and cold bay water. H-30 arrived over head and located the man betwen Pinole and Hercules floating on a home made raft. H-30 contacted the man over the helicopter pa system and he indicated that he needed help. CHP H-30 lowered a rescue basket to the man and hoisted him to waiting Hercules Pinole fire fighters and AMR. The man was cold but otherwise uninjured. He was able to make a homemade anchor to slow his drift into the middle of the bay.

He was hoisted abroad and transported to the shore where Hercules Pinole fire fighters and an AMR ambulance was waiting.

The CHP said the man was cold but otherwise uninjured.
