Pedestrian run over by multiple vehicles on Highway 580 in Oakland

One person is dead after reportedly being run over by multiple vehicles along westbound Interstate Highway 580 late Sunday evening, the California Highway Patrol said.

Officers were first alerted to the accident at around 11:35 p.m. Sunday when a driver called in to report that she saw a man "fly" in front of her vehicle along westbound I-580 near the Harrison Street offramp.

According to the CHP, the driver told officers she believed she did not hit the person.

However, a number of vehicles ran over the man as officers were on their way to the scene, officers said. As a result, the CHP issued a SigAlert at 11:54 p.m. closing down westbound I-580 at Grand Avenue. The man was declared dead at the scene.

Oakland police reported that they received a call from a citizen saying that a black sedan with front-end damage had stopped right off the Harrison Street offramp around the time of the accident, and that the driver asked people for help to jumpstart the car, the CHP said. Officers did not say if this vehicle had any connection to the collision.

The SigAlert was canceled and all westbound lanes on I-580 were opened at 2:21 a.m. Monday, the CHP said.
