Vallejo Police Officer Fatally Shoots Man Suspected In Knife Attack

VALLEJO (CBS SF) – A 16-year-old Union City boy suffered minor injuries inflicted by a man who was then fatally shot by a police officer in Vallejo early Monday morning, a police lieutenant said Monday afternoon.

Police did not identify the teen, who was treated at a hospital and then released, or the 21-year-old Vallejo man who stabbed him during a fight that involved "numerous drunken subjects," Lt. Jeff Bassett said.

Police also have not identified the police officer who shot the stabbing suspect, but Bassett said he is an eight-year veteran of the department.

Police responded at 12:38 a.m. to calls about several people fighting with weapons outside a large party in the 1700 block of Sacramento Street, police said.

When officers arrived, they saw a 21-year-old man holding a knife and attacking the teen who was on his back, police said.

Police said in a statement that the stabbing suspect "presented himself as an immediate and lethal threat to the victim," so an officer shot the suspect several times.

Police do not know the cause of the fight, Bassett said.

The last officer-involved shooting in Vallejo occurred Oct. 16 after Adam Clayton Powell, 41, of Suisun City, allegedly pointed an AR-15 assault rifle at two Vallejo police officers who were sitting inside a Starbucks store at 199 Lincoln Road W.

The gun did not fire and the officers pursued Powell and shot him three times. Powell survived the shooting, and was scheduled to appear in Solano County Superior County in Vallejo Monday for the setting of a preliminary hearing date.
