Vallejo Caregiver Who Sexually Assaulted Disabled Adult Among 104 Fugitives US Marshals Arrested In 2 Weeks
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- The U.S. Marshals in the Northern and Eastern District of California arrested of 104 wanted violent fugitives and gang members from throughout the region during a two-week operation.
Among those arrested was a caregiver who assaulted a person in a wheelchair while working in a Vallejo facility that cares for mentally and physically disabled adults and children.
Douglas Chenelle, 72, was located by Vallejo Police Detectives and U.S. Marshals on June 19 and taken into custody without incident. He had been on the run since last year after being charged with sexual battery.
Detective Drew Ramsey of the Vallejo Police Department tells KPIX 5 that Chenelle worked in the crafts area and was caught by other staff molesting a male confined to a wheelchair.
"The suspect had moved away and had been outstanding," said Ramsey. "It's always good to get someone like this behind bars. Especially considering the fact that our police department is so short staffed."
Chenelle and the others fugitives, whose charges ranged from probation violations to murder, "were singled out because of their propensity to commit violence in the streets of California, whether through the crime itself or through their gang associations and their violent backgrounds," U.S. Marshal Don O'Keefe said in a statement Tuesday.
About 10 grams of cocaine, 2 pounds of methamphetamine and 1 pound of black tar heroin were seized in the operation, which were primarily centered in Oakland and Sacramento.
