UC President Napolitano Plans To Review Out-Of-State Admissions, Tuition
OAKLAND (CBS / AP) -- University of California President Janet Napolitano says she is examining whether the public college system has been admitting too many out-of-state and international students.
Marking her one-year anniversary as leader of the 10-campus system, the former Homeland Security secretary said Tuesday that said she shares the concerns of Californians who have watched the percentage of nonresidents accepted rise sharply during the recession -- from 12 percent of the freshmen accepted in 2009 to 30 percent this fall.
Napolitano says UC needs to look at whether it has struck the right balance between those higher-paying students and in-state students whose educations are partially funded by the state.
She says that review will happen as she works with the UC Regents to develop a budget for the next academic year that may include the system's first tuition increases in four years.
