Uber Drivers Organizing Nationwide Protest To Demand Higher Fees
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Some Uber drivers are planning to turn off the ride-hailing apps this weekend as part of a nationwide protest demanding higher fees and tip options.
Over 1,200 drivers said they will not work from Friday to Sunday and plan to protest at various Uber offices across the country, including company headquarters in San Francisco.
Among the things they're demanding is UberX fares raised by 60 percent, a tip option to be added, the minimum fare rate to be raised to $7 and cancellation fee to also be raised to $7.
"We always welcome feedback from driver-partners," an Uber spokesperson said. "Each week, tens of thousands of drivers across the U.S. begin using the Uber app to make money on their own time, to reach their own goals."
Earlier this year, Uber had 160,000 drivers with that number quickly growing. About 20,000 Uber drivers currently work in the Bay Area.
