Fugitive Suffers Minor Injury In Hayward Officer-Involved Shooting
HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- A fugitive from Louisiana suffered a minor injury when he was shot at by a U.S. Marshals deputy near Hayward Thursday afternoon, an Alameda County sheriff's sergeant said.
The shooting happened as deputies with the Marshals Service were serving the warrant at a cul de sac near the intersection of Maud Avenue and Kelly Street at about 3:15 p.m., sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly said.
The 26-year-old male suspect was wanted out of the state of Louisiana for weapon and drug related charges. While attempting to take the suspect into custody, the Marshals deputy was endangered and fired at the suspect who was in a vehicle.
Chopper 5 video showed at least a half dozen unmarked police vehicles stopped near a white Audi van that seemed to be at the center of the investigation. There were also a number of Alameda County Sheriff's office patrol cars at the scene of the shooting.
The nearby Fairview Elementary School was placed on lock down in an abundance of caution. That lock down was lifted after about an hour.
The Alameda County Sheriff's office later said the suspect was struck by either a grazing bullet or flying debris and suffered a very minor and superficial injury. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He was later released from the hospital taken into custody by U.S. Marshals on the arrest warrant on gun and drug charges.
The suspect was not identified. No officers were injured during this incident.
Alameda County Sheriff will be the agency leading the investigation.
