Two wounded in a shooting near the Guadalupe Parkway in San Jose

SAN JOSE -- One person was dead, another wounded, and a northbound lane on Highway 87 was shut down during the morning commute early Tuesday following a shooting that occurred Monday night in a homeless encampment in San Jose.

According to San Jose police, the incident took place at around 9:48 p.m. along the Guadalupe River near Willow Street.

Arriving officers located a woman suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

During the investigation, officers found a second shooting victim at a nearby encampment. The adult male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The investigation in an area just off the freeway forced the closure of a northbound lane slowing traffic on the busy freeway for nearly 10 hours. Police were still recommending that commuters use alternate routes at noon on Tuesday.

No information regarding a suspect or motive has been released. The identity of the deceased victim was withheld until his family was notified.

Police said it was the city's 12th homicide of 2023.
