Two Dead In Fatal 300-Foot Plummet Off Highway 1 In Monterey County

MONTEREY COUNTY (CBS SF) -- Two people died early Tuesday morning after a car went off state Highway 1 and fell roughly 300 feet down a cliff in southern coastal Monterey County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Firefighters with Big Sur Fire responded to a vegetation fire at 4:40 a.m. and discovered the car engulfed in flames at the bottom of the cliff near Big Creek Bridge. Fire crews confirmed at least one victim in the car and Monterey County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue crews later discovered and confirmed a second victim.

Both victims, who remain unidentified, were transported to the Monterey County coroner's office.

According to the CHP, the vehicle is a rental 2018 Chevrolet Camaro. The car's color remains unknown due to damage from the fire. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
