Twitter Reveals Lack Of Diversity Among Workforce, Says It Has Plenty Of Work To Do

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Saying it has "a lot of work to do" when it comes to diversity, Twitter released information about the diversity of its workforce on Wednesday. The numbers reveal most employees of the social networking giant are male, and predominantly white or Asian.

According to a blog post from Twitter, the company's global workforce is 70 percent male overall. Ninety percent of the Twitter's tech workers are men, along with 79 percent of the company's leadership. In the company's non-tech workforce, there are an equal number of male and female employees.

Among its employees in the United States, 59 percent of workers are white, while 29 percent are Asian. African-American's consist of two percent of the company's workforce, and Hispanics are three percent. Two percent reported "other."

Twitter reported that its leadership is 72 percent white, 24 percent Asian, two percent African-American and two percent other.

"By becoming more transparent with our employee data, open in dialogue throughout the company and rigorous in our recruiting, hiring and promotion practices, we are making diversity an important business issue for ourselves," the company's blog post said.

Twitter's decision follows other Silicon Valley companies, including Google, Facebook, Yahoo and LinkedIn releasing data showing their lack of workplace diversity.
