Trump on 60 Minutes Says He Will Soon Deport Millions of 'Criminal' Immigrants

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) -- President-elect Donald Trump's hard-line immigration stance was a central part of his campaign message in 2016 -- and he said in an interview airing Sunday that he plans to immediately deport approximately two to three million undocumented immigrants.

"What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate," Trump said in an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes." "But we're getting them out of our country, they're here illegally."

Such a promise was directly at odds with House Speaker Paul Ryan, who told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday that "we are not planning on erecting a deportation force." Ryan said "I think we should put people's minds at ease" on mass deportation because the top priority is really border security.

Trump also told 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl he would accept a fence in some places along the U.S. southern border where he had promised to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it.

"For certain areas, I would but certain areas, a wall is more appropriate. There could be some fencing," Trump said.
