UPDATE: I-580 in East Bay Reopens Following Saturday Morning Truck Crash Onto BART Tracks

CASTRO VALLEY (CBS SF) -- Interstate 580 reopened Saturday afternoon after an hours-long closure that began with a pickup truck plunging onto BART tracks and the subsequent bomb squad investigation of a suspicious device in a vehicle at Eden Canyon Road.

BART service was stopped between Castro Valley and Dublin/Pleasanton due to the police activity, according to the California Highway Patrol.

An Alameda County bomb squad was called to investigate a suspicious device in a Chevrolet Tahoe at Eden Canyon Road, the CHP said.

Around 10:30 a.m., BART announced that service was suspended on the Dublin/Pleasanton line between Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton station due to what the agency described as an earlier vehicle intrusion on the trackway.

BART service resumed on the Dublin/Pleasanton line around 1:30 p.m.

"We are now resuming train service between Castro Valley and West Dublin using one track that is not damaged following the 10 am. freeway collision that sent a vehicle partially onto our trackway," BART spokesman Jim Allison said.

However, shortly before 3 p.m., BART and CHP tweeted that train service had again been halted and all traffic on I-580 was stopped due to a suspicious vehicle.

The freeway closure was lifted around 3:35 p.m.

Motorists continued to experience delays and were advised to use alternate routes to avoid the area.
