Tow Truck Driver Killed In Crash On Southbound 101 In Sausalito

SAUSALITO (CBS SF) -- A tow truck driver was killed along U.S. Highway 101 in Sausalito Tuesday when a vehicle lost control and struck him as he was loading a vehicle onto the truck bed.

The California Highway Patrol in Marin County the crash happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. on southbound US-101 north of Spencer Avenue in Sausalito. The incident blocked the two right lanes for about two and a half hours before authorities reopened the lanes at around 4:50 p.m.

The CHP said the tow truck driver was loading a black Prius onto the bed of the truck when a silver pick-up truck spun out and hit the tow truck. The force of the collision hit the Prius into the tow truck driver and killed him. He died at the scene.

Preliminary information indicates the female driver of the Prius had pulled to the right shoulder to call the tow truck, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

The Prius driver was standing away from the vehicles and was not hurt. The Chevrolet driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Marin General Hospital, Barclay said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as a cause in the collision.
