Tips For Safer Winter Driving From The CHP
(CBS SF) -- California arguably has some of the best, and worst drivers in the world, and the CHP has to respond to hundreds of crashes when big storms pass through the Bay Area. Luckily, they also have a list of tips to help drivers avoid those accidents in the winter.
Winding coastal roads and congested freeways can make driving hazardous when the conditions turn wet and cold, so the CHP recommends drivers check their brakes, windshield wipers, defrosters, heater, and exhaust systems before heading out into winter weather.
If you're heading to the Sierra, be sure to check your antifreeze, and bring your chains, even if they aren't required. It's also helpful to know if your car is front, or rear wheel drive. Food, water, blankets, and a flashlight can also come in handy if you get stuck along the journey.
Some of the advice from the CHP may seem obvious, but other tips like keeping a full tank of gas can help if you have to change your route, or turn back during a bad storm.
