Thousands lose power in San Francisco Presidio, several other neighborhoods

Nearly 8,000 Pacific Gas and Electric customers in San Francisco were without power Monday morning during a series of power outages affecting the Presidio and other neighborhoods in the northern part of the city.

PG&E indicated that main outage began just before 8 a.m. and was affecting the Presidio area as well as areas around Fort Mason, Russian Hill, Pacific Heights, and the Inner Richmond neighborhoods.

As of 10 a.m. more than 6,000 customers were still without power following separate outages which the PG&E Outage Map indicated began about an hour after the initial outage. 

A PG&E spokeswoman said a damaged underground cable caused the outages which at its peak affected 7,860 customers. Spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said crews were able to restore power to a majority of those customers, but 1,779 remained without power as of shortly after 11 a.m.

By 2:30 p.m., most of the outages appeared to have been resolved, but another outage reported at 1:19 p.m. was affecting more than 1,300 customers in the area around Market Street and Duboce Avenue.

The estimated restoration time was 4:45 p.m.
