The Simpsons - 'Marge vs. The Monorail'

An unscrupulous profiteer sells the people of Springfield on a defective monorail system, with Homer as the conductor.

Mr. Burns is caught dumping highly toxic waste from the nuclear power plant in the park and is fined three million dollars. He pays his debt to society in cash. The city of Springfield hold a meeting to discuss how they should spend the money. Marge suggests they use the money to fix the pot holes on Main Street. The idea is about to pass when a stranger, Lyle Lanley, convinces the townspeople that they need a monorail to put Springfield on the map, as he did for nearby towns, including North Haverbrook. Caught up in Lanley's sales pitch, a la "The Music Man," everyone votes for the monorail, except Marge.

With the excitement in Springfield at fever pitch, Homer sees a commercial for Lanley Institute of Monorail Conducting and enrolls. At the conclusion of the conducting class, Homer is appointed conductor. Marge stops by Lanley's office to apologize for voting against the monorail when she discovers a note book full of articles about how Lanley stole from other small towns by skimming monies meant for the monorail. She drives to North Haverbrook and discovers it is a ghost town. She meets Sebastian Kobb, who tells her the town lost everything after the city spent all its money on Lanley's monorail, which was defective and ultimately worthless. Marge takes Kobb back to Springfield to warn the others.

But they arrive too late. Homer has already taken the monorail on its maiden voyage with Leonard Nimoy and a large group of passengers. Lanley has left for the airport with the town's money. But Lanley's flight makes an unscheduled stop in North Haverbrook. When it lands, the townspeople are waiting for him with torches and pitchforks. Meanwhile, the monorail goes out of control, running at full speed. Kobb gets on the radio and tells Homer how to fasten a crude anchor. Homer throws the anchor out the window and the monorail comes to a stop, but not before the makeshift anchor destroys a good portion of Springfield.
