The Simpsons - 'Marge In Chains'

Marge is jailed when she is convicted of stealing from Apu's convenience store.

Homer sees an infomercial for "The Juice Loosener" on television and orders one. A worker at the Japanese plant where the squeezer is made coughs on the appliance before it is shipped. Homer—like everyone else in Springfield who ordered the device—comes in contact with the dreaded Osaka flu, and soon most of the town is infected with the virus. Lisa, Bart and Grandpa also contract the disease, leaving only Marge to nurse them back to health. While picking up supplies at the Kwik-E-Mart for her family, Marge accidentally forgets to pay for a bottle of bourbon that Grandpa had asked for. Apu has her arrested.

Rumors about Marge and her arrest spread through Springfield faster than the flu epidemic, with everyone presuming she is guilty of committing the crime before she is even put on trial. Homer hires disreputable lawyer Lionel Hutz to defend Marge against the charges and the jury finds her guilty of shoplifting. She is sentenced to spend thirty days in jail.

With Marge behind bars, her absence in the community creates a domino effect, causing the moral fabric of Springfield to decay and unravel. Police Chief Wiggum fights off scores of rioters and thieves who take to the streets. When Marge finishes her time and is released, the townspeople gather to welcome her return. They admit their mistake in having turned their backs on her and resorting to gossip.
