Tesla's Musk Could Unveil All-Wheel-Drive On New Electric Car 'Model D' Thursday
FREMONT (CBS SF) -- Elon Musk put all the Tesla fan boys and girls in a tizzy when he tweeted out a cryptic photo Oct. 1 leading up to Thursday's big announcement of a new electric car model.
The photo shows a garage door half open with the headlights of a car visible. The text reads "about time to unveil the D and something else."
The tweet sent speculators into overdrive, including one local analyst Thip Chowndhry who snapped a photo of a Tesla near the factory in Fremont. He told MarketWatch the light colored rectangle at the bottom of the center of the photo is a camera sensor, which would support the theory that the D electric car Musk was tweeting about stands for "driverless."
The Palo Alto company's big announcement could be the introduction of all-wheel-drive on the current Model S. All-wheel-drive, already available on other luxury cars, would help boost sales in the snowy Midwest and northeastern United States meanwhile also helping the company meet its own sale estimates of 50,000 cars a year.
The tweet last week boosted the stock price by nearly 6 percent in one week, considered to be worth an estimated $2 billion, according to CNN Money.
Thursday's big announcement is set to take place at 7 p.m. at the Hawthorne Airport in LA County near Musk's other project, Space X.
