Tesla Motors Looks To Install Massive Sign Near Fremont Plant
FREMONT (KPIX 5) -- Billboards are a common sight along Bay Area freeways, but drivers along the Nimitz could be in for a surprise. Tesla is looking to install a billboard standing 40 feet tall and stretching 200 feet wide near its factory in Fremont.
The sign would be installed where there are currently a cluster of poles in an overgrown lot near Interstate 880.
"I think it's important for us to say here is Tesla, here they are in Fremont and they're very proud of them," Fremont Mayor Bill Harrison told KPIX 5.
The sign will practically scream it, with a rendering of a Tesla splashed across an illuminated sign 40 feet tall and 200 feet wide, roughly the length of five school buses.
Fremont has strict regulations against billboards, and signs are supposed to be no taller than 20 feet. But the mayor said he would like to see the planning commission make an exception for a company that has brought jobs and big business to the city.
"We want people to know as they drive down 880 that a) they're in Fremont and b) the Tesla plant is right here," Harrison said.
Tesla did not return KPIX 5's calls asking for comment. The planning commission is expected to vote on the sign at a meeting Thursday night.
