Pittsburg couple arrested in hit-and-run death of teenage girl

PITTSBURG -- A Pittsburg couple has been arrest in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that left a 17-year-old girl dead after she was struck while walking near a school.

Pittsburg police said 34-year-old Roberto Sainez was being held on charges that included vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run and during with a suspended license.

His 30-year-old fiancé, Vanessa Landeros, was being held on being an an accessory after the fact and destroying or concealing evidence charges.

The two were arrested in the 3000 block of Gladstone Drive in Pittsburg where investigators were serving a search warrant.

"We are extremely proud of the swift and hard work our detectives, fatal traffic investigators and evidence technician put into this case to provide the family closure and justice," Pittsburg police said in a Facebook post.

Pittsburg police said the teen was killed Tuesday evening as she walked toward Pittsburg's Golden Gate School.

Pittsburg police said officers responded to the area of Stoneman Ave. and Briarcliff Dr. just before 7:15 p.m. for a report of an injured person in the roadway.

Upon arrival, they discovered the17-year-old lying in the street, suffering from injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. 

Officers immediately began providing medical aid, and the teenager was transported by medical staff to an area hospital where she died from her injuries. 

The fatal collision investigation team responded to the scene and determined that the teenager was walking northbound across Stoneman Ave. from Briarcliff Dr. and was headed to Golden Gate School. As she crossed into the westbound lanes of traffic for Stoneman Ave., the vehicle struck her.

The teenager was walking within the fully marked crosswalk in the intersection.

The driver left the scene, headed westbound on Stoneman Ave. and is wanted for felony hit and run.

"We would like to thank our community for their cooperation in this investigation. In the coming days, investigators will be presenting this case to the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office for the filing of formal charges," police said in the post.
