System Error To Blame For California Tax Refund Problem For 23,000 Residents
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Tax day has come and gone, but thousands of California taxpayers may still have to do a little adjusting due to an error by the state.
The Franchise Tax Board said the state mistakenly sent refunds to more than 23,000 people, without first verifying the amount of money the taxpayers claimed was automatically removed from their paychecks.
The state blames a system error that occurred between March 8 and 11.
Affected taxpayers will be notified beginning Monday, the FTB said. They will either get a bill for the amount they owe or a refund. However, the FTB said the vast majority of the affected refunds are not expected to change.
"Please accept our apology for any inconvenience this may have caused you or your clients," the FTB said in a statement.
