Suspicious Package At Stanford University Prompts Partial Evacuation

STANFORD (CBS SF) - Parts of Stanford University remain closed Tuesday afternoon following evacuations prompted by the discovery of a suspicious package on campus, Stanford police said.

Campus police received a report of a suspicious package near the Tresidder Memorial Union building around 8:55 a.m., and a bomb squad remained on scene as of noon, police said.

A statement on the university's emergency information web page said the Tressider building and several nearby buildings have been evacuated and the occupants of buildings along the campus' Salvatierra Walk have been asked to shelter in place "out of an abundance of caution."

The buildings are expected to remain closed until after 1 p.m., according to the statement.

The public is advised to stay away from the area.

University officials said the rest of the campus remains open and classes are still in session.
