Suspect killed in San Leandro following stolen car chase

SAN LEANDRO -- A suspect was shot dead and two other suspects were arrested following a stolen car chase on Interstate Highway 580 and crash overnight near San Leandro.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened at about 2 a.m. in the area of 163rd Avenue and Liberty Street in the unincorporated Ashland neighborhood.

"We do know that it is a stolen car," said Lt. Tya Modeste with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. "As I was arriving, we got information that it was a stolen car out of Hayward."

According to the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, It all started when the Highway Patrol spotted a car stolen in Hayward. That car is said to have crashed when it exited 580.

"The suspects were wearing ski masks when deputies arrived on scene," Modeste said.

At that point, investigators say it was the Highway Patrol and Sheriff's Deputies trying to apprehend several suspects who ran from the car. They say there was a brief foot chase before one suspect and trooper ended up fighting on the ground.

"It appeared that one of the suspects was trying to disarm the CHP officer," Modeste told reporters. "What I can tell you is that shots were fired."

Multiple agencies were involved in the shooting, and the California Department of Justice now takes over the investigation.

"It's getting worse," Leslie Bocalan said of his neighborhood. "We've been here for 30 years. The problems have been progressing. Drag racing. A few high-speed chases."

Neighbors Leslie Bocalan says he can't remember an incident quite like this near his home, but the problems they have seen are often coming from or going to 580.

"Easy access for them," Bocalan said. "Easy access to go through, get on the other side of the freeway."

Eventually, the other two suspects were taken into custody, Modeste said.
