Student Trapped Under Fallen Tree In Santa Cruz During Bay Area Storm

SANTA CRUZ (KCBS) — A Santa Cruz school shut down after strong winds from Thursday morning's storm caused a large tree branch to topple over and injure two students.

Firefighters were called out to Gateway School on the 100 block of Eucalyptus Avenue at around 8:30 a.m.—just as students were arriving to school after a large fir tree branch came crashing down on the playground.

"One child was pinned under a tree, they removed the limb, transported him to the hospital, in the ambulance. He's been assessed there and—no broken bones, just some bruising so we're very thankful for that," Zachary Roberts, the school administrator, told KCBS. "The other child had some light bruising, was checked out and cleared.

Gateway has since been closed as a precaution and Roberts said the city was inspecting the rest of the trees on campus and would determine whether or not it would be safe for students to return on Friday.

Gateway is an independent k-8 nonprofit school with 244 students.
