Student Stabbed Near Concord's Mt. Diablo High School

CONCORD (KPIX 5) -- An 18-year-old student at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord has received medical treatment after being stabbed off campus Monday morning.

Mount Diablo School District officials told KPIX 5 that the senior student was stabbed at Todos Santos Plaza in Concord and drove himself to school, about a half mile away. The student flagged down his friends and a security guard in the school parking lot and an ambulance was called.

"We don't have the details as to why he came here," said Concord police Lt. Mike Kindorf. "He may have been in a bit of shock and decided to come here looking for assistance."

The teenager's injuries were considered to be minor, according to police. One cut to the lower abdomen. He's expected to fully recover.

"The school was not on a lockdown because we didn't think it occurred here," said Kindorf. "But I'm sure it makes it difficult to teach a normal days class."

But since there was so much confusion as to where the stabbing happened, some students and parents say the school should have gone on lockdown. One student told KPIX 5, "I got scared because I wasn't sure if it happened on campus or off campus."

A woman who was dropping off her niece at the school heard what happened and said she she was not surprised.

"Actually my stomach's turning right now," said Delia Handy. "The kids out here are cruel. There's a lot of kids in the area that are cruel. They grow up too fast."

Investigators said the stabbing victim was not cooperating with police.

"It could be that he doesn't want to cooperate with the investigation or it may be that he's in pain and not in a place to make a detailed statement," Kindorf said.

Police said at this point there is no indication if drugs or gang ties were involved.

Investigators have not been able to find  any surveillance video of the incident from the surrounding cameras in the area and are hoping to get more answers from the student.
