Student Stabbed At San Jose's Overfelt High School

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Two teenage suspects were taken into custody Thursday morning after 14-year-old student at San Jose's Overfelt High was stabbed, authorities said.

San Jose police said they were called to the school at 9 a.m. with a report of a student being injured.

Arriving officers discovered the 14-year-old freshman boy suffering from at least one stab wound just outside of the school gym. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He is expected to survive.

Officers were able to locate two teenage suspects in the stabbing who were taken into custody. Police said that one of the suspects was a 10th grade student at Overfelt. The other suspect, who does not attend the school, was allegedly the assailant who stabbed the victim.

A student told KPIX 5 that the student was stabbed because he was wearing blue clothing.

The school was put under a shelter-in-place order after the altercation. Students were being allowed to leave the school if they were accompanied by a parent or guardian.

East Side Union High Superintendent Chris Funk said his staff members saw the crime unfold and acted swiftly.

"Some of the staff members kind of got around the two suspects and they did not put up a fight," said Funk. "So I applaud their efforts and they did an amazing job."

The motive for the stabbing is currently unknown, but the superintendent is trying to reassure the community.

When asked if this was a random crime, Funk replied, "Well, you have to define random. If they showed up on the campus, they probably were looking for this particular student. So in that sense, I don't know if it was random."

The motive and circumstances surrounding the stabbing remain under investigation.
