Strong Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake Shakes Capital Of Vanuatu
PORT VILA, Vanuatu (CBS SF) -- A strong earthquake shook the island capital of Vanuatu early Friday morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake measured magnitude 6.8 and struck at a depth of 218 kilometers (136 miles) at 3:47 a.m Thursday local time.
The quake was centered under the ocean 84 kilometers (52 miles) northeast of Port Vila.
No injuries or damage were immediately reported, but an earthquake this size can cause considerable damage in substantial buildings with partial collapse and even shift structures off foundations.
Based on all available data, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
