State Licensing Board Didn't Know Contractor In Berkeley Balcony Collapse Paid Millions In Settlements
BERKELEY (KCBS) — The construction company that built the Berkeley apartment complex where a balcony collapse killed six people nearly two weeks ago has paid out millions to settle numerous lawsuits alleging shoddy work — including $26.5 million in the last three years alone.
In addition, the board that oversees contractors in California knew nothing about the settlements paid out by Segue Construction.
The Contractors State License Board says there's no legal requirement that anyone notify the board of such lawsuits or settlements.
The board's enforcement chief told the San Francisco Chronicle that if they'd known about Segue's record, the contractor's board would have at least opened an investigation.
