State, Federal Agencies Respond To Sunken Barge Leaking Fuel Into Bay
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Divers Saturday checked to see whether fuel was leaking again from a barge that capsized early Friday morning in San Francisco Bay south of the Bay Bridge.
Divers are preparing a report on their dive to the 112-foot freight barge Vengeance but as of 1 p.m. the results were not available.
Also, Saturday morning, a crew flew over Vengeance and saw minimal diesel fuel on the water.
"That's a step in the right direction," Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Sarah Wilson said.
Crews were on the water with a boom in case the barge started leaking again, Wilson said.
Scientists are also monitoring the barge to determine whether that boom needs to be redeployed.
So far, Coast Guard officials have said the diesel fuel has not impacted the shoreline or wildlife.
Vengeance capsized shortly after midnight on the Bay between Yerba Buena Island and Oakland. Four thousand gallons of diesel fuel and 300 gallons of hydraulic fluid could leak into the water.
